Yamaha Factory Styles

Hello!

I've had my Genos since it came out. We all know that Yamaha "recycles" it's factory styles from older models. As an example I'll choose the NewCountry style that was on Tyros 1 thru 5. It isn't on the Genos.  I've got factory styles from all the Tyros 's.  I loaded the NewCountry styles from Tyros 1  -  5 into Genos and listened to them all.  Each one sounded great on the Genos. The Tyros 1 version had a much stronger rock feel than some of the others. I am still surprised that all the older Tyros models styles sound so good right out of the box.   I'm not exactly sure where I am going with this.........but I'm thinking about creating some more "GEMS" style disks like I did years ago. I really think many of the older styles have better OTS than the Genos updates of them. Many of the Legacy voices used are beautiful and still stand on their own!  Thank you Yamaha for keeping this stuff so backwards compatible.  -charley

Hi Charley

I've done the same on my SX-700.
As I previously had a Tyros, I saw no good reason to not add the older styles to my 'active' usb.

I've also imported a lot of the Genos, SX-900 and other Yamaha styles from earlier keyboards. I have some from Korg, Ketron, Roland and Technics too.

I also have your GEMS style collections. Thank you for the work you've put into those. Love to see some more. I admire your ability.

I agree with you totally. Some older styles play amazingly well on the current arrangers. Half the fun of playing is in using the capabilities of an arranger to mix and play about with styles to achieve amazing backings.

Remember you can download Genos versions of the T5 styles that are not preset on Genos from the Yamaha website. See how they compare with the legacy versions.

Dear Rattley,

I agree about Genos OTS. When I went trough all the factory styles, one by one, I was not excited  about OTS. Lately I discovered the enormous potential of Genos sounds, specially when combining the 3 Right voices. Now I have almost all styles changed with OTS that I developed by trying with a lot of time, and I'm very happy for the results.

I hope that people who buy Genos do the same kind of a deep study and search. Yamaha does not show this potential, and looks like the styles programmers did not devote much to OTS, that are quite repetitive.

I always alter the OTS voices in styles I use a lot because I find the factory ones are not suitable for the songs I like to play, and as you say unimaginative.

I agree you really have to sample the OTS in the Yamaha styles, as they have different presets on some of them that really sound better/different than their standard voicing.

I have my favorite voices noted for various Guitar types, Fiddle, Strings, Pedal Steel, Growlin Sax and Piano.

The S950 came with 408 styles but I have another 1509 different named preset Yamaha styles from the previous Yamaha keyboard models plus their S970, S975, SX and Genos one of a kind styles.

Someone shared another 510 custom style pack called "Pro Styles" at the forum years ago. Everyone of them are as good as and better than the Yamaha styles.

That's over 2400 excellent styles to pick apart and create darn near anything you want your style to sound like.

The early PSR3000 & 900 styles ( Downloadable from this site) sound very good with good overall balance on my DGX670.
As mentioned before I have my favorite voices saved as RGT's with Style unticked, so can use with any loaded style.

Thanks for the replies.  It's not just the right hand OTS that are different between the models.  The voicing in the styles is usually different too. This is the difference I am writing about. The styles have different voices in the 4 variations of accompaniment.  These voices are are slightly more difficult to alter and save than just the right hand OTS..........but NOT that difficult!!   I think this will be a fun topic to explore.  Auditioning different styles has always been where I find the most pleasure playing an arranger.  Whoever thought my old Yamaha styles might give my current Genos styles a refresh!

How Yamaha chooses which styles to include on a new model has always intrigued me. I've discovered that many of Tyros 1 to Tyros 5 styles have just had their OTS changed and some changes in style voice instrumentation.  How much time and effort does Yamaha spend updating these recycled styles ........... or ANY new style.  Does 1 person control these edits or is there a whole team dedicated to it?  Does or is AI a factor in modern style making? That's a subject that will require pages of future posts!!  -charley
