Expansion Voices v Standard Voices

Why do voices in an expansion pack take up so much more data file space than standard voices available here and elsewhere?

Example:
On the Fantasy Pack that was recently shared  the voices contain 59 files for a total of 627 MB
versus
Henni's Voices available on PSR Tutorial contain 3,520 files for a total of 17.8 MB

Expansion pack voices contain new sample wave data. That (can) take up a lot of space depending on how detailed the sample is (often it's complete overkill)

Voice files, on the other hand, contain instructions to say "start with a wave sample that's already installed on the keyboard. Then make these specific adjustments to the settings." They do *not* contain the actual wave samples.

Derek,

That makes for limited use on a SX-900 and below, as space gets gobbled up quickly.  :-[ and why on YEM I can't include the above Fantasy Pack without eliminating others.

I was thinking of just trying out the pack styles, but I assume expansion pack styles are made with some of the included voices, and therefore would not play well.

Anyway thanks for your detailed answer :)

Hi Larry,
You are assuming correctly: if there are voices in expansion pack, then these are probably used by styles in the same pack. And yes, if needed voices are missing when you're using a style, the style won't sound as intended.
Of course, not every style inside pack uses all voices in the pack. Sadly, YEM is not friendly enough to tell us which voices are used in particular style -for that, you'd need some 3rd party software (usually called "re-voice" or similar).

Larry,

Most quality expansion packs are not memory hogs like this particular bloated Fantasy pack which was just thrown together and made using older keyboards. Several of the instruments in the pack are not even used in the styles.

Thanks, I loaded that Fantasy Pack into the SX-900 to give it a try. Pretty good, but not good enough to justify the memory it hogs, so it's no longer loaded in the keyboard.  And yes I did notice other packs had much more, using much less data.

This is a third party pack and not produced by Yamaha there packs have been compressed to allow us to load and use more in our keyboards. Third party packs are usually a lot larger in size.

There's no such thing as compressed or non-compressed pack. Most of the space in pack is taken by voices and voices consist of wav samples. That is, the size of the voice depends on number of wav samples that are used for particular voice, and by length of each sample in that voice.
For example, a drum kit voice is expected to be smaller than piano voice, because each drum (note) only takes a second or so. For piano, a note can sound several seconds and thus requires longer wav samples.
To make voices smaller, maker can decide not to use sample for every note. For example, a sample is used only for every 3rd or 4th note (keyboard automatically extrapolates tone shift). So, instead of using 12 samples per octave, only 4 samples are used -which makes voice size three times smaller. But one can't go too far with this technique, because voice quality will suffer.
There are other methods that influence voice size, which are used depending on what kind of voice is created. For example, a flute can sound indefinitely, even wav sample is maybe only 3 seconds long.
In short: voice size only depends on amount of information (number & length of samples) inside voice.

● Everyone kept saying "That won't work!" - Then someone came along who didn't know that, and - just did it.
● Never put the Manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)
