As the thread title implies, what are your opinions on moving from a PSR S770 to a used Tyros 3?

Yeah, old to an older model, but the sounds are better(?) Drums probably won't sound as good maybe. Keybed probably better. I don't really care for VH.

Yay or Nay?

If you go for a Tyros 5 the sounds are much better, and you have the s.art voices too.

This really is a decision only you can Make. You need to try it out for yourself but technology has moved on so far since Tyros 3 If you don't want to use any of the now free sample voice and Style packs then go ahead as it is still a nice keyboard and a couple of my friends still have there's.

I do not recommend to go from S770 to Tyros3. As Eileen mentions, this would mean a step backwards in technology and you lose for instance compatibility with YEM. Some sounds will sound better on the Tyros3 but in my opinion it is not worth it.

I recommend against the Tyros 3, too. It's a step back to a technological dead-end. At least T5 has some continuity with the current product line.

Sorry to sound so negative -- pj

Did you finally go for the Ty3 or not ?

Would like to know your decision. ;)

Thanks for your feedback, JH

The s770 has better drums & 140mb of expandable memory, the T3 has super articulation 2 voices (phrased woodwinds, solo brass), nicer keybed, larger screen. so it depends what you're going for; if you're making beats or might need downloaded sounds, I'd stick with the s770 (and it's also sleeker and lighter)

But if you *must* have phrased articulation, then the T3. But it's a bigger & heavier, not as expandable (currently not at all, as they've removed the samples from Yamaha Music soft), doesn't have the "Real Drum" kit used on most pre-Genos styles, and doesn't have built in speakers, and isn't compatible with YEM.

OK new situation. I have the opportunity to buy a used Tyros 5 76 key or a used PSR SX900. Still got the S770.

I'm pretty much fine with everything stock on either keyboards, no expansion packs tickle my fancy. I value portability so it would be easy to pick SX900 and they got some new styles but I'm very used to the now old layout of the button interface, plus T5 has more voices like ensemble that I'd like to try.

What say the hivemind here? Would the Tyros 5 still have the better sound quality than the SX900?

EileenL

Bear in mind that the Tyros 5 76 note is very heavy to carry around. The SX 900 sounds very good but is only 64 note and much easier to carry around.
The choice though must be yours.

If you want 76 keys it has to be the T5, but it's physically big.

So clearly you need to try them both but I think coming from the S770, the Sx900 would be a better choice than the T5.

A few years back, I also traded from an S770 to a T5. Personally, I was rather disappointed with the T5 compared to the S770. I can't quite put my finger on it, it was probably just overly rosy expectations. Maybe it was the older tone generator chip, maybe a difference in the way the EQ coloured the sound, maybe it was losing 'modern' features like Live Control and the arpeggiator and drum setup, maybe I struggled to read all the labels on the panel buttons, maybe I struggled to make it sound 'alive'. Maybe it was even the font they used on the screen that annoyed me. Eventually I gave in and moved to Genos which I should have done in the first place.

In my quest for a Yammie that came closest to my requirements, I have had the S770 , s975 and the Tyros5(76) and the Genos. When the SX900 came along, I finally had the keyboard that suited me best. Without a doubt they are all keyboards that you don't have to be ashamed of and they are all of good quality. But the evolution of keyboard technology continues... a A touch screen in stead of knobs ... so easy like your phone .. regarding your question and your wishes: S770 to T5 or the 'baby' Genos? Go for the SX900....period  ;)

Happy to report that I am the owner of a PSR SX900! Now I gotta put the s770 on reverb/eBay haha 😃 I happened to find another deal on a used unit that just has wear on the plastic around the style variation buttons. Basically paid SX700 price!
