Using Wi-Fi For File Transfer

My Genos is connected to my router via a Wi-Fi infrastructure connection.

I downloaded a registration file to my PC and wanted to put it on my Genos. Is there a way to use the Wi-Fi connection to do this?

I know about restarting the Genos and holding down the PLAYLIST button to put the Genos into storage mode, but that seemed like way too much trouble to move one little file. So instead I put the file on a flash drive and plugged the flash drive into the Genos.

But I was hoping there would be a way to do it with the Wi-Fi connection. Is there?

Thanks...

Hi mtrigoboff,

The USB Storage Mode works (as the name indicates) only via USB, so not via WiFi.

You can use the WiFi connection for MIDI (Port 1 only), installing Expansion Packs from the YEM, and Audio playback (AUX IN), e.g. from an iPhone/iPad.

Unfortuately, the WiFi connection cannot be used for "normal" file transfer.

By the way, for transferring relatively small files (e.g. styles, MIDI files, registration files, multi pad files, user voice files) you can use the "MusicSoft Downloader" (MSD) program (only available for PC, not for Mac).

In order for the program to work, the current Yamaha USB-MIDI driver must be installed on the PC, and the keyboard must of course be connected to the PC via USB cable. In contrast to the USB Storage Mode, however, file transfer with the MSD works in the keyboard's normal operating mode.

Best regards,
Chris

Since I will always have my Genos connected to my PC via a USB cable, is there any reason why it would be useful to also have the Genos connected to my router via Wi-Fi? I am starting to think I may not have a reason to use the Wi-Fi connection.

I am curious why the Genos has this Wi-Fi capability. What is the common use case that led Yamaha to include this feature?

Hi mtrigoboff,

I have already mentioned the possibilities of the WiFi connection above:

You can use the MIDI-over-WiFi connection for example to connect an iPad with an app like "Songbook+". This allows you to call up/switch the registrations on the Genos from the iPad and also switch the assigned PDFs (e.g. sheet music or song text) by calling up registrations on the Genos.

In conjunction with the PC, the WiFi connection you can actually only use the WiFi connection to install Expansion Packs. I find this option better than working with the USB stick method. You don't need to worry about "Full" or "Quick" Pack Install methods when using WiFi. Additional Packs are normally installed without formatting the Expansion memory when using WiFi. (The Expansion memory is only formatted if the content to be installed differs fundamentally from the current content.)

In addition, when the Genos is connected to your local WiFi router, the current date and time is automatically set on the Genos.

Best regards,
Chris

The biggest reason to use wi-fi on the keyboard is so it knows the time. Then files are time-stamped so you know when you last updated them.
