I've installed this program and I can see that it will be very useful for helping me to control the large number of style files that I've amassed over the years. I'm intrigued by the way the program can identify identical style files, even though they may exist under different names. I've displayed them linked in the inserted column, as per the screenshot on the Tutorial page, but I'm completely foxed by the feature that should enable me to discard all but one of each group of matching files. This would be a very useful tool, if only I could understand the brief description in the Tutorial. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Once you have all your styles in the database you can use "Duplicates - Select all except one of each" to select only the doubles and then "File - move selected files to trash" to move these doubles to the trash folder (you can define in the settings where the trash has to be located). You can remove these doubles afterwards with Windows File Explorer.

Brilliant. Clear description. I've just created a mini-file of Styles and made a copy of one of them which I renamed. Ran the file into PSR etc and just followed your instructions. That description in the Tutorial doesn't mention the "move the selected files to trash" in the "File" drop down menu.

Also, I didn't do myself a failure by unleashing the program against my total collection first.

Thanks again.

My collection of styles is stored on a switchable read/write usb stick which spends most of its life plugged into my PSR-970 arranger. I have a backup of the files on a usb stick connected to my laptop. I unleashed this program on to the backup collection and used its feature to identify identical styles and to delete all but one of each group so identified. The upshot was that:

The original collection has 100,831 styles
The backup set was reduced to 85,866 styles, a 15% reduction.

Once I've satisfied myself that the backup collection is accurate and trustworthy, i shall copy it on to the switchable stick.

85,866 styles?

I hope you plan on living to be 125 years old.  It will take that long to play each one just a single time.

I don't need to play them all, nor do I need to read every book in a library. If you're organised, you can search for likely contenders to meet the purpose in hand. Then you filter those to find the one or ones you want - similar to the library search of the catalogues to find a selection of books that can be compared to find the one or ones that need to be examined in more detail.

Hey Alan... I'm returning to my keyboard and all related stuff after a long break. Like you I have a sizable files collection (that I enjoy) and I was wondering how you got on with the Duplicate feature? Did you trust it and actually delete the surplus?

Does it do the same for MIDIs? I've not looked yet, I'm just starting to get organised and it seems I liked to collect stuff, lots of stuff.

The "Duplicate feature", in my opinion, is the program's most powerful feature. When I delete duplicate styles, I am happy that the feature operates correctly, but I apply it to a copy of my collection. That then becomes the collection that I use in practice, but I still have the master set entire.

Thanks Alan, I am currently tidying up my collection to then start organising and I did come across a folder I'd put Stylebase 'duplicates' into. In an effort to control the numbers my finger wanted to press the delete key but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I will trust the program, find a corner to hide them from myself, and leave them there.

Sorry, I'm pretty new at this.

What s/w are you referring to?  Is there a link to it?

thank you
