Hello everybody,

Just bought a new psr sx600 after selling my good old psr s550.
Where my s550 did a wonderful job playing (XG)midi files, the sx 600 sounds like crap!
Don't even know how to describe the sound... Voices sound like a cheap pc soundcard, or even better: an '80's keyboard.
What the hell am i doing wrong?

Toril S

Sounds like the MIDI files are not really compatible with the SX600.

Are still the same midi files as ever...XG midi files, they do play, but the instruments sound different, more as if there are no XG voices on the keyboard.
In my old s550 the difference between the XG voices and the gs/gm/GM2 voices was huge... On the sx600 they sound the same

Record a MIDI song on the keyboard to check if that sounds all right.

Hi Martin, the SX600 is an excellent keyboard.

I would change the XG format voices to the SX600's preset voices, and use the on-board mixer to work the master EQ and effects on each of your MIDI songs.

after this it would save the MIDI files (in this case songs) with the new settings.
I hope this helps a bit

Regards.

On the SX700, I also have the impression that the midi voices (GM but indeed also XG) are rather poor compared to the so called panel voices. This is quite ok for using them in styles (sometimes this is even an advantage in that case) but they are much less suited for playing midi files. You could play your files on a PC to compare the sound with your SX600. You can use any midi player on PC. Note that the standard Windows MIDI synth is very weak so you will also need a decent midi synthesizer (such as the free VirtualMIDISynth from Coolsoft with for instance "Timbres of Heaven" for the GM/XG samples).

Well i suspect that there are better midi files are to get, then in XG format for SX600.
Do have also a SX600 , so i am curious if there are quality midi's for sx600 that goes  beyond  XG midi quality?

Have you looked on the Yamaha Music soft site.

Hello Martin,

I had the same bad experience when loading to my new PSR SX900, a lot of midi files that sound very well in my old PSR2000 and that I need/appreciate.  The alternative, nothing to do, you have to edit each file, changing in some cases to a newer voice, adjust EQ parameters like volume, reverb, chorus, sometimes modulation, etc etc, and now they sound real better than before, but believe me, It's a lot of work to do depending on the ammount of midi files you have, at the end you will be a pro i  editing midi files. It's difficult to find on the web new versions of these old midi files, they were created few years ago, and still ramain that way without  any new updates, so, you will have to edit your files, according to your taste and needs, beleive me.

Best regards

Bernardo

Hi there, I don't experience any problem with the midifiles I own.
The SX600 supports GM, GM2, GS & XG where let's say a MODX only supports MIDI GM.
It's a huge difference in favour of the SX600.
cheers,
Chris

If MIDI files are created on a Yamaha keyboards, they will play fine on SX600. I have verified this with tons of MIDI songs I have (on Tyros3)
If MIDI files are created on other keyboards, you may have to remap the voices.

Today I verified that some MIDI songs (origin unknown, from friends) sound CRAPPY on my SX600 too.
All MIDI songs I recorded on my Tyros3 and on this SX600 sound GREAT.
