When I'm out gigging I sing most all my stuff..The keyboard is merely my backing band....
How many others sing mostly or play only instrumentals (dinner music)
Also how many only play at home - no gigs ?

I have a voice like a frog f——-g through a knothole,so I stick to playing the keyboard.

I have been in bands most my life I am 72 now, and a few years ago swapped the clubs (what was left of them) and started playing in nursing homes and the like and found it to be more rewarding than playing a social club, were they are only there for the bingo and after the last game the place empties. Anyway I digress! I now play mainly for pleasure at home in my little studio and the great thing is I can now at last play what I WANT TO PLAY and not what the punters think they want to hear whilst they are chatting away. The thing is if you are are playing at home who gives a--- what your voice sounds like the main thing is play your keyboard sing and enjoy yourself.  Have you listened to some of the great song writers sing, I will just mention Bob Dylan and leave it there.

I sing and play the arranger as a one man band. I play the instrumentals in all the songs if they have one in the original recording. I'll add an additional instrumental section if folks are up dancing.

I will be doing my FIRST gig in over 15 months tomorrow. I did 3 one hour performances over the weekend at a local state park for friends and relatives and anybody close enough to hear it ...  ;D

I mostly just play instrumentals, and gig occasionally. I am just an amateur, so I do it for fun.

Until my health went to Hell in a handbasket, I performed daily using the keyboard to provide my backing while I sang. I was never a great player, but always managed to get through most songs without too many mistakes. My saving grace was my vocals. Many of my audience members thought I sounded like Roger Whattaker or Deane Martin. I thought I just sounded like me! :)

All the best,

Hi Advid, I particularly have a musical duet with a girl, I also make musical arrangements, and regularly upload instrumental melodies to my YouTube channel.

At this time, due to the pandemic and also to public order problems in my country, I have not had parties or concerts, but I still play with my keyboard at home so as not to get bored.

I'm a Church Musician, so for me it's a mix.  I would say that singing while playing happens more frequently, but it's not by much.

For me, the trick is to create registrations the sound good both as vocal accomp. and as Instrumentals.  Today it could be instrumental, but next Sunday, I'll need to sing it, and I don't want to have to worry about choosing the right registration for each one.  When I pull up the music on my tablet, the Genos opens the correct Registration.  I don't want to mess with that.

PS Occasionally I have to sing without accomp.  Certain chants for Easter, Christmas, and Funerals are to be done sans instruments.
