Hi all

Mainstage has some pretty good string voices. Do anyone has edited a string voice close to this one on sx700/900

To my ears this sounded just awful!! Try some of the synth voices mixed with strings. It s fun to experiment😀

Sounds like there's a little pitch envelope being applied at the start of each note. You can't set that up on the keyboard Voice Set, but you can do it in YEM.

Unfortunately, you can only reuse the inbuilt waves on Tyros / Genos so for SX you would need to import a starting sample, and then you'd be better off using a sample that sounds just like you want it to in the first place.

Hi madakaben,

In your sound example, strings are obviously layered in several different octaves. There are Voices (e.g. Ensemble Strings) in the SX700/900 in which several octaves are already combined. Of course, you can also combine several individual Voices in the Right 1 - 3 parts. In the "Menu > Voice Setting" display you can set the desired octave position for each keyboard part.

In addition, I think you can hear a Portamento effect in your sound sample (and a lot of reverb ;)⁣). In the "Voice Setting" display just mentioned, there is the "Portamento Time" setting for each part (see SX700/900 Reference Manual, page 39).

Further important information on the Portamento function can be found in the Reference Manual on pages 47/48. This refers to the "Voice Edit" display (Voice Selection display > touch "Menu" icon > then "Voice Edit" > Common> page 2/2 > Mono).

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Hi all,

The "Solo Ensemble Strings" sound in the YT video, to which the user "madakaben" has linked, probably goes in the direction of oriental music. Portamento is often used here. For "western" ears, standard Strings with a clearly audible Portamento effect sound a bit strange, but obviously the user wants exactly this sound. And in my opinion, this can be achieved on the SX700/900, as I described above, by using the Portamento function. :)

Best regards,
Chris

I don't think it's portamento - to my ears, the sound always bends up at the start, which can only be done via an envelope.

Portamento would bend up or down, depending on the previous note

That sounded like one of the synthetic, weird sounds that are part of the sci-fi sounds that are in the Sound Effects section. Really not suitable for any song that I know of.
