Saving OTS

Howdy...... first......I am pleading ignorance.  I don't have a lot of knowledge about OTS.  However.... I started using it.... modified voices... tweaked everything.... saved everything.... and I really like using it.  I have been use to doing everything on my own in registrations. My question..... should I save it to user.... hard drive... or USB. If I save it to user.... can I later save my user to the USB.  Also.... I see where I could save my OTS and my song to the music finder.  If I do that..... can everything be backed up on the USB?  If there is a section I should read.... or a YouTube video I should watch.... would you please direct me to it.  I did a search and didn't find the answers to this. I have watched some Youtube videos where they are saving their song creation with the OTS.... and saving it to user.  Is this the best method?   Can "user" be saved later to the USB.  Once again..... please pardon my ignorance.
Thanks..... Chuck

If you are using a third-party style file, you can actually save the OTS to the style itself very easily. However, I then suggest saving that modified style to the User area of the keyboard, followed by a save to the USB drive, just to be on the safe side. It works for me!

Now, if you are saving to an onboard style, you must use the onboard style creator program, which will then chance it to a 3-rd party style, which can be saved using any of the above methods, or just save it to a registration, but be sure to back up the registration to the USB drive, again, just to be on the safe side. No such thing as too many backups. ;)

Good luck,

Gary...... thanks for the response.  There is nothing 3rd Party I am using. I tried to save everything to the "User"..... but it tell me there isn't enough room to save  it there. Does that make sense.? So I am saving everything to the flash drive...... with no problem. I am taking the flash drive out and copying it and pasting it into my computer for a backup.  Is this the best thing to do?  Not sure about the "user" ....... I thought it was unlimited in storage.  Plus..... didn't you store all your songs in music finder so you could access quickly at the gigs.  I always followed all your information you have posted for years in the forum.  You have always been very helpful to everyone.  Thanks for all you do.

Chuck,

No storage medium is "unlimited".

However, you should have lots of room on the User drive to store styles. Styles don't take up much room (they're typically less than 50K), so it must be something else that's taking the space on your User drive. For example, if you store audio files on User, that will chew up available space quickly.

So go through your User drive, and find out what's taking up the space, and get rid of what you don't need.

Regarding best practices on what drive to use, it's up to you. Do whatever is easiest. As you say, it's easy to back up a USB drive. Not so easy to back up the User drive. But USB drives aren't as convenient. And USB drives can be slow. I know when I had a Tyros, I *had* to put some styles on the User drive, because I needed the quick access.

By the way, you don't "store songs in music finder". The music finder is a file made up of records telling it where to find the desired style, and how to initialize it (tempo, variation, etc.). The referenced style could be anywhere (User, USB, etc.)

In summary, use whatever drive works for you. But clean up your User drive, as you will always want to use it for something (copy and paste, for example).

Hi Chuck,

on Tyros5, the User drive is only 6.7 MB (megabytes! ;)⁣). You can use the User drive as a temporal storage (for files you are currently editing). You should, however, copy the finished versions of the files (e.g. Styles) onto the internal hard drive and preferably also onto a USB stick.

In contrast, Registration Bank files, User Voice files and even Multi Pad files are really very small. Here I also have many, often needed files in the User drive of my Tyros5. However, you should not store too many Styles or MIDI files in the User drive, otherwise the 6.7MB will quickly be full ...

P.S.
Do not forget to backup your USB sticks on the computer from time to time. You can backup the T5 hard drive to the computer via USB storage mode.

P.P.S.
I hardly work with OTS, but especially with Registrations. The only advantage of OTS is that these are stored directly in the Style file. If you work with Registrations, you do NOT need to change the OTS of the Styles. So simply take the original Styles (leave the original OTS), make the desired panel settings (eg keyboard voices) and save all settings to the Registration buttons. You best name the Registration Banks when saving with the name of the song, and all is well. :)

Best regards,
Chris

Looks like the good folks above have answered your questions. Great advice.

As Fred stated, saving the songs in the MFD is a great feature that points to where the style is stored. Style files are very small and take up only a small amount of space.
