I've discovered a new way to make music

There are two major problems with band in a box , at least for me..the main one is you can't play anything live , it's fine to enter the chords and pick a style, it's a shame they couldn't make perhaps a cut down version without all the real tracks, maybe using samples or midi. The second problem is a joint one it's far to expensive , at least for hobby players like me and it's huge enough to fill a laptop hard drive if you do a download instead of buying one from them  for a really cheap program which  you enter chords and play them out in loads of styles try Chordpulse. No I've no connection with them but it's very good, and has a demo which Band and a box hasn't.

Hi all,

Started playing around with BIAB again:

Hennis BIAB Achy Breaky Heart 2

Hennis BIAB Achy Breaky Heart 3

One cool thing that can now be done with these:

Hennis BIAB Achy Breaky Heart separate Tracks

These can now be used to create Audio multipads off course with this AMAZING software.

Keep well all,

Hi again,

An even better version:

Hennis BIAB Achy Breaky Heart 4

I am urgently looking for a soundfont that can play Yamaha Mega voices on the midi parts in my DAW. If anyone can help, please contact me in private.

Even a program that will accurately play midi to Mega converted midi files direct on my PC will also help. That way I can record my converted midis as audio and include with the rest of the song in BIAB. Thus, any program that will play Mega-voiced midis direct on my PC would help me a lot.

I've installed Jorgens Genos.ini file to Cakewalk. Is that the way to achieve this?

Cheers,

Henni

Hi Henni and All ... I am pretty new to this forum AND to arranger keyboards but as a Band in a Box user I have found this thread to be interesting.

The reason I am posting is because I have been doing some research on software based arrangers (vArranger, One Man Band, etc.) and I came across a program called JJazzLab that might be of interest to some. (Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with JJazzLab) ... anyway JJazzLab can best be described as a poor man's Band in a Box. It doesn't have anywhere near the functionality of Band in a Box but it balances that out by being free. It's like Band in a Box in that you put chords in a matrix and JJazzLab will play them as backing tracks. It also uses Yamaha styles. They also have an Arranger window that will respond to chords from a midi keyboard but this feature almost seems like an after thought. It doesn't work very well but then, again, it's free. Here is a link to their website (I hope this is allowed) and a link to a video showing the program in action.  https://www.jjazzlab.com/en/

Hi Jan,

I am not aware of ANY software that can accurately convert audio to midi.

Cheers,

Henni

Hi again Henni ... I am not sure if this is what the person who asked the question meant but you can export your Band in a Box songs as a midi file. Most who I have talked to take the midi file into their DAW (some don't like Real Band) and use vst instruments on the various tracks.

Henni

Hi OldTimerBill,

Thank you for the info. I downloaded & installed the program. Will enjoy playing with it. I don't think BIAB will be able to export the audio sections in a song to midi - imagine the possibilities when that becomes available!!!

I do not have enough good things to say about BIAB. My latest discovery is mixing audio song parts with the other song parts that I've already created i.e. vocal backings etc. that I can find on the inet. You can even start with a pure audio file and simply add more audio instrument sections to it!

Anyway, thank you for taking the time to respond.

Keep well my friend,

I tried BIAB for a while, but I didn't like it. The user interface was extremely complex and cluttered and inelegant.

Some software is like driving a well-designed luxury car. Other software is like driving a poorly designed old beater. BIAB does a lot, but the experience of using it was not pleasant for me.

This was when I was trying to create a more arranger-like set of capabilities to go with my Montage. Now that I have a Genos, I have no need for that.

I have BIAB 2022 and it is quite acceptable to create songs by inputting the chords etc, but I agree it does get a bit robotic sounding after a while vs my Yamaha arranger for sure,....I also take the BIAB song and convert it into a midi file and transfer into my DAW for further editing, tweaking, and mastering makes it so much easier. Have fun and enjoy..

Henni

Hi Dnj,

Nice hearing from you again. Although I do not currently own any arranger, I feel just the opposite. I am now spoiled by the thousands of truly amazing audio BIAB styles. Just listened to the demos of the new Korg PA5X and I am not impressed at all.

I think the thing I would like is to to connect a dumb Keybed to my PC through BIAB and play the BIAB styles live - not sure if this could be achieved though. I'll search the inet on this issue. The styles are unlike anything I've heard up to now & you know I used to be in the style modification business. So I really like good styles.

I know BIAB is not a realtime arranger and maybe this will be a limitation for playing it live. But boy, if at all possible just think of what could be had.

Anyway, nice to hear from you. Please send my regards over at the SynthZone.

Cheers,

Hi all,

This is how I created Hennis BIAB Sweet child o mine. (This is what I added from the BIAB archive)

It REALLY seems like BIAB can export styles using REAL TRACKS (real audio) to correct sounding midi. I still need to investigate, but can you IMAGINE the possibilities? If you are clever you can use these midis to create the absolute most AWESOME styles for your Yamaha arranger. Unfortunately I cannot experiment with that for now, but time will tell.

Can ANYONE inform me if it is at all possible to play live with BIAB using a dumb midi keyboard controller? As I said, I KNOW BIAB is not a realtime arranger.

Keep well all,

Henni

Henni

Hi all,

Over here I'll post some of my favorite BIAB styles. Be sure to check here from time to time for more.

NOTE 1: What you hear is the style part ONLY (No RH playing at all. This is what you get when you select the chords with the left hand only, amazing as it seems - the solo sections will follow your chords faithfully, no matter which cords you select)

NOTE 2: I used MP4 Gain to normalize all demos and in the process destroyed the high quality of these tracks. I am busy re-recording all of these, so they will no longer contain the same content.

Hi again Henni,

I just found this software called ReChord that advertises itself as "An arranger inside your DAW". I haven't downloaded the demo but you may want to watch the videos.

https://www.rechord-vst.com/

Here is what else it says:

Have you ever thought about your DAW working as a software arranger with auto accompaniment?
As in: you play chords on your external keyboard and the song in your DAW responds live to your chord changes?
As in: you write a four-measure pattern in C major,  and then play (and record) a whole song over that pattern, by just playing your chord progression with your left hand and the melody with your right hand, exactly as on a keyboard arranger?
Or as in: when you arrange your songs, you write just the melody and the chord changes on one track, and everything else automatically happens on all the other tracks?

It looks interesting.

That sounds interesting! Music can be made in so many ways, and as long as we have fun doing it we must never stop!

Not the same as BIAB but there is a program slightly similar called Chordpulse. Not been updated since 2022 but there is a demo that can be downloaded.

Just another option, Jjazlab 4 has more options for intros, endings and various other things than BIAB. It's free, can read and play BIAB songs plus Yamaha style files and midi. Just enter chords by typing and select a style. Shame it is not part of Genos.

Oldden

Oops, I can't spell. The music program is spelt Jjazzlab. Two Zs and two Js . I hate spellcheckers sometimes.
