CVP "pop waltz" style question

Hi there. I am new to this forum and am somewhat of a novice player. I have a CVP 509, (yes circa 2012) and whenever I play the style "pop waltz" under "ballad" and change from one main variation to another mid-song; e.g.. from A to B or A to C etc, the style will "miss" a beat and what was say beat 3 will suddenly become beat 1 or beat 2 in the 3/4 measure. It makes playing just about anything virtually impossible unless you stay with the same style variation all of the way through the song. Has anyone experienced this and knows how (if it can be) to fix it? Did this issue get resolved on later Clavinovas such as the 709, 809 etc?

Your question is confusing...Are you playing back a Midi File and also using style at the same time ?.

If you change a variation on beat 3 the style will auto restart on beat 1.

This should not happen when playing with a style, regardless of age or model,  but to give us some insight you need to answer some questions.
Play the style by itself and change variations - does it still happen
Watch the beat counter (the little light) and see if it really misses a beat or you just think you hear it missing a beat.
Does it only happen with this style or every style

Thank you for the assistance. I am simply playing the style (as one would with any other style on this keyboard) and it does this all of the time. (To answer graham's question, I have never done anything with MIDI). But I think I need to clarify and correct what I said now that I have listened to it more carefully. My earlier description wasn't accurate. Here we go. If any of you have this style, you will see that it is in 3/4 time but that the basic pattern repeats every TWO measures of 3 beats each (6-beats total) with the snare drum back beat occurring on the first beat of the second measure in the pattern. So what actually happens is not exactly what I described earlier. What does happen is that when you change a variation, instead of the style staying where it was within the 6 beat cycle, it will sometimes repeat the first measure twice when it should have gone to the second, so if you are playing a melody, your snare will end up being on the first beat of the first measure instead of the first beat of the second. Does this make sense? (The red tempo light stays correct blinking red, green, green, red, green, green, etc.)
I know this reads convoluted but I am not certain that I can describe it more succinctly in text only.
Using numbers, what I get when I change to an alternate variation is
(1,2,3) (first measure) then (1,2,3) first measure repeated when I should be getting (1,2,3) (first measure) followed by (4,5,6) second measure of a 6 beat pattern with a snare on beat I labeled 4 in the second measure. Hope that helps explain my problem. (I am a drummer so there is no confusion here  :) )

So the pattern is two bars long, and when you change variation it will happen at the end of whatever bar you are in when you press the variation change. So of course it will not play the second bar. It will go to the first bar of the new variation. This is not a fault, it's what is supposed to happen. If you want to avoid this you have to press the change towards the end of the second bar of the pattern.

Thank you very much for your explanation Mikf.
I guess with this one I have to be much more careful as to exactly when I actuate the change. I guess with other styles it isn't an issue because two consecutive bars are pretty much sounding the same so you don't notice any difference. But isn't there a way to set it so that one can have the current style complete a cycle before the new variation takes effect?

While I have your attention, does anyone know the best place to sell a used Clavinova such as this? I really want to upgrade to the 809 but would like to find a good home for my current model. It doesn't look like there is a big market for used Clavinovas - especially one that it this old, and my guess is that they are not worth very much on the open market after 8 years.

I know if no way to set the change to delay to the end of the pattern.
With regard to disposing of the CVP, if you are buying a new one you are in the best position to negotiate a decent trade in. It's also a big enough instrument to be hard to ship to someone.  So if you are selling it, probably have to find a local buyer. There might be some people looking for a compact piano for their kid to learn on. But I think your best bet is to find a good local retailer and make a decent trade in part of the deal.
The value is not going to be high,  although the age, this keyboard is still a very decent instrument. When you take into account the cost of moving it, I would take what I could get from a dealer as a trade.
The alternative if you are feeling generous is to just give it away to a care home or a young relative. You wouldn't be losing much.

Thank you Mike for your kind suggestions.
I look forward to reading the forum regularly.
I found it interesting that Pop Waltz is the only style (to my knowledge) where it matters exactly WHEN you push the style change button in order to maintain proper timing. Have a good day!

Brian,

I think you can fix this by changing it to a 6/4 style (which it actually is).

This kind of change is beyond my skill level, but there are others on the board who can help you with it.

Post this as a question, and I'm sure you'll get some help with it.

Cheers,
Fred
