7-zip:

https://www.7-zip.org/

On a 64-bit machine use 64-bit version.

On Windows 10 (64-bit), I currently use 7-zip V20.02 alpha.

Chris
● Everyone kept saying "That won't work!" - Then someone came along who didn't know that, and - just did it.
● Never put the Manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)

Even if it is not the best one (as its compression level) 7-zip is top on the list on most archive software review sites :)

The best one, in compression level, is KGB Archiver.. Very small file after archive files. Yes, I know it takes a lot of times to compress/decompress process, but when you have all time in the world, you may use it!

Vali

7zip and Winrar(not free, but no subscription).

  Thank you for all the replies.   I neglected to mention I have been using Win Zip Windows 10.   Initially it was free but now they request payment and I assume
periodically I will be expected to pay more.

  Fred:  When you say "windows" are you suggesting Win Zip ?    Thanks,  Bob

Windows will happily unzip a file. Just use File explorer. Double click on the zip file to display the files within. Then copy them wherever you want. The copy operation will unzip.

...or Right Click on the zip file and choose "Open with", and click on "Windows Explorer".

I use total commander
It got a lot of internal packers and unpackers and you can add more
It got two windows for drives make it easy to sort copy rename swap between drives files
Rename all files in a dir in one go and a good search functie

I use:

(i) The builit-in Windows archiver for normal zip files;
(ii) 7-Zip (free) for rar files and zip files the Windows archiver has trouble with - (I also use it for for making password protected folders as a compressed archive);
(ii) PeaZip (free) for archives that the other 2 don't work with (I had to use it once with a large complex set of rar files that 7-zip had an error with).
