Christmas Bells

Back in my college days I was a DJ on our campus radio station.

We were required to play Christmas songs at least once per hour during the last weeks before Winter Break.  My favorite one to play was the Snoopy-vs-the-Red Baron tune called Christmas Bells.

A note from Wikipedia about the song:
A followup to their earlier "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron", the song is about how Snoopy had to go out and fight the Red Baron on Christmas Eve. The Baron has Snoopy at his mercy after a long dogfight, but instead of shooting him down he forces Snoopy to land and offers Snoopy a holiday toast. Afterward, Snoopy and the Red Baron fly their separate ways, "each knowing they'd meet on some other day".

Here it is as played on the DGX-650

I know this was posted a couple weeks ago, but I'm just discovering it now.  I was looking at the Christmas Concert on the main page, looking at the keyboards used, and I saw this one uses a DGX-650, which I think has a similar sound engine to my PSR-E433, so I wanted to hear how it sounded.  I didn't recognize the title, but when I played the song, I recognized it.  I always thought this was just called "A Snoopy/ Red Baron Christmas" and never knew -- after more than 4 decades of listening to it -- that it was called "Christmas Bells!"

I would say it was the Christmas of 1974 when I first heard this.  That was the year that I really started getting into listening to popular music on the radio, and I turned 11 that November.  When Christmas season came, I was delighted at these rock-based Christmas songs that the pop/rock stations were playing -- songs like this one, "Little St. Nick" by the Beach Boys, and even a Cheech and Chong Christmas "song" (more like a story telling with background music) about Santa Claus.  So this brings back some memories!

Good performance!  And as a side note, when they sing that it was "forty below" in the song, is that Fahrenheit or Celsius?  It doesn't matter!  That's the temperature where the two scales converge so that -40 deg F = -40 deg C -- and either way, it's pretty dang cold!
