Hi All

I use my Bose Compact for small gigs - up to 40/50 people and my Mackie SRM450's for anything bigger. The bigger gigs are getting rarer so I'm considering buying another Bose Compact for the occasional bigger gig and selling my Mackies. Just a bit concerned that 2 x Bose Compacts wont be loud enough for 100/120 people. I know the audience will hear the music very clearly but will they 'feel it' enough to make them want to dance?  Alternatively anyone tried the Maui 28? Maybe one of these would out perform 2 x Bose compacts (albeit in mono)

Thanks guys

When I performed at larger venues, often with audiences to 200 people, mainly dancers, my pair of Bose Compacts was more than adequate to get them out on the dance floor. I too previously owned a pair of Mackie 450s, they were very loud, but also very distorted sounding at higher volumes. I dumped them after just one week.

Good luck,

Thanks Gary. I know you like your compacts. I've never had a problem with my Mackies distorting and they are very powerful but huge to lug around and store for the occasional gig. Think I'll probably sell them and get another compact. Cheers. Rob.

The comparable LD Systems set is the Maui 5s.  I sold my Bose Compacts and replaced them with the Mauis because they sound better, have deeper bass, more connections, e.q. and Bluetooth.  They also cost half as much as the Bose.
The Maui 28s, are real killers and would probably handle anything we are liable to come across.  They are heavier and cost more though.
I have played parties up to 200 with the Maui 5s and still have room to go louder.
The bass is discernibly deeper than the Bose Compact bass.
I have used them five nights a week for a couple of years now and they have had no problems at all.
I STRONGLY recommend two of whatever you decide to get.  Arrangers sound SO much better in stereo.  And, you always have a backup in place should one fail.

The Bose are more than sufficient!

I have two MAUI 28 G2's which are the bigger brothers of DonM's MAUI 5's. They are 1000 watts RMS and can peak at 2000watts. They each have a 4 channel mixer and are, as Don states, considerably cheaper when compared to the Bose L1 Model 2 which are comparable in some ways.
I have attached an Excel spreadsheet which I had previously put on this forum but it disappeared along with a lot of other posts etc when backups or whatever failed. The information may be a bit out dated now but it gives a comparison of various systems which people on this forum have used.

This spread sheet is very helpful. I'm in the mode of researching line array compact systems. Have been wanting to compare Bose L1's Vs Maui 28 G2. Thanks for spread sheet.

Rob,

I have 2 Bose Compacts for sale. they are in perfect condition and listed in the For Sale section of this forum.
And I have used these two outdoors for a group of more than 200 without even cranking them up too high. No problem.

Just getting around to reading this. I use two L1cs for 200 people, indoors. Both Bose set at 12 oclock and keyboard master vol at 10 oclock.  That is less than 1/2 the volume. Loud enough to see people having to talk in each others ear. Dont want tp be louder than that!!

Yes Don - it's "All About That Bass"!! (A newer pop song title by Meghan Trainor)
I had never used a separate sub woofer when playing gigs until recently.
(Each of the systems that are discussed in this topic have them.)

I had always just relied on my speakers of my P.A. system to do the bass work.
(Way back, when I played in bands, the bass was, of course, handled by the bass player's amp.)

Recently I downsized my heavy, heavy P.A. system to just one powered speaker on a stand.
It has lots of power, but is not great on the bass (only a 10" speaker).
So I then linked it to an old gaming computer speaker system (which has just 20 watts RMS on the sub woofer).
I positioned the sub woofer close to a wall and played - Wow!
I never heard my keyboard's bass lines punch through so clearly - it sounded like I had hired a bass player!!
And I pointed the two small speakers of that system towards me, to use as a monitor.

So, with this new full range method, I just finished playing a gig for about 180 people.
No problem at all - and lots of good feedback from the crowd!!

So the integral sub woofer of any line array system can really pop out the bass and makes the the resulting music very 'live'!
Everyone should add one to their sound system if they don't already have one...just think - all the D.J.'s use them!
;D
