Page 60 of the Genos Owner's Manual describes a way to (if I understand correctly) create a new user style and then have its specific settings restored when you hit a particular OTS button that you have chosen.

As far as my understanding goes, you could do something similar with a registration.

I am wondering why you would choose between these two techniques. What's the trade-off?

I think it's also quite possible that I am totally missing the point...

There are different preferences with different folks.  I like to use OTS so I know what the Left, and right Voices will be, and which Multi pads will play with a style, but when building a song using a registration bank (8 registrations), I can vary those OTS settings with each registration and even vary the style or use a different style with each registration.

My understanding is that registration banks are where we can ARRANGE a piece of music.  Sometimes I use 2 complete registration banks to create an arrangement.

Joe said it. A registration can store more settings than OTS. Depends on how much work you want to put into it.

The registration memory is likened to a "Scene" found in the older Yamaha synths.  It memorizes all the Panel settings (snap shot) including the Mixing Console settings.

From the FAQ document found here:  https://psrtutorial.com/lessons/faq/PSRFAQ.htm

WHAT COMMANDS OR INFORMATION CAN BE SAVED IN A REGISTRATION

There are 10 commands that can be saved to most PSR series of keyboards, and 11 in some Tyros series keyboards. The list includes:

1. Song (midi file link)
2. Style (onboard or User)
3. Voice (onboard or User instrument voice(s)
4. Multi-Pad (onboard or User)
5. Harmony (Instrument voice(s)
6. Tempo (style)
7. Pedal (functions you wish your foot pedals to perform when activated.)
8. Transpose (Master, Song, or Keyboard)
9. Scale (tuning scale of keyboard)
10. Mic Setting (All microphone settings)

With a style you can change OTS 4 times (for each variation)
With a registration you can change a style OTS 10 times (for a Genos)

Not to mention you can save so much more in a registration as pointed out by Joe and others
You can also associate those registrations into a Playlist.
