I know I can play two different vst's at same time on different channels in the daw.  Can I however play two different vst's at same time in real time? With so many good vst's available I would like to layer a couple of the live.

Yes, you can use as many external VIs (or virtual instruments) at the same time as your host device-- whatever you're running the VIs on, which will most likely be a computer-- can reasonably handle in terms of available memory, processing power, etc.

You can even use multiple host devices, each running several VIs, but that would be an extreme setup; for most people, a single computer running multiple VIs will probably be more than sufficient.

If you want to layer multiple VIs together using the same channel, just send that channel's MIDI to each VI so they're all responding to the same Notes. You can also layer one or more VIs with your keyboard's voices.

Hi ekurburski,
you may search on Youtube for "layering sounds" and put to the sentence the name of the DAW you are using.
There are tutorials about it for every different DAW.
