playing vst's on psr's

I'm wondering if I can play a vst from my psr3000 while at the same time playing the kb?  What I would like to do is layer a dx7 patch played with dexed with a r1 and/or r2 sound from the kb.  In real time of course.  Also if I can't do it on the 3000 how about on other later kb's?

Yes,

you need to connect your psr to your computer and use the yamaha midi driver. Then load dexed in your daw  and then it will work (as long as you output midi notes through midi to your daw. If you don't have a daw you can use one of the many free vst hosts which you can download on the internet. A free vst host that many people use for live play is Cantabile. The lite version is free and can be found here: https://www.cantabilesoftware.com/free-vst-host

Keep in mind that you need to use a low latency driver to use VST's together with the psr sound. Latency is the time your computer needs to produce the sound. Most modern soundcards have their own driver and can give you results as low as 2ms. As long as you stay below 11 ms output latency then you can play the sounds together with your psr.

Funnily enough this is exactly what I have been doing recently. I was interested in the FM sounds on the MODX or RefaceDX, but then I found out about Dexed. I run it in Cantabile and it works well. Cantabile is very easy to set up and use. And it's free too!

You will probably want to create a custom MIDI setup for the times you use the VST. If you're using R1 to drive the VST then you need to decide if you also want R1 to produce sound from the keyboard.  If you don't then you will want to set R1 local control to off. If you do, then you will want to set R1 to not output the 'program change' control change message. Otherwise, when you select a new voice on R1, it will also change the program on the VST.

You will likely also want to play both parts through the keyboard speakers, so you'll connect your PC's headphone socket to the keyboard AUX IN. You'll need a cable with the appropriate sized plugs, which are different at each end. Some people use a USB DAC, but I've found that the output from the headphone socket was good enough for me. The keyboard has a control to adjust the AUX IN volume.

Finally you can use the free ASIO4ALL driver as your driver, this will give you a decent low latency.

Cantabile is very easy to set up and use. And it's free too!

Cantabile Lite is free, but the paid versions have more features. There are two paid versions-- Cantabile Solo and Cantabile Performer:
