Saving a Change in the Voice

I'm having a hard time figuring this out, so hopefully someone can assist. I've written, recorded and saved a song. I now want to change one (or more) of the voices in the file, so I go to the Mixer, make the changes, play it, and all is well. However, when I save the revision and then close and reopen the file, the prior voices play back (as if the revision/save had never happened). This happens even if I give the revision an entirely new name. Am I missing a step? Is it possible to change the voice of a file and save it without needing to re-record? Thanks for any pointers!

Hi Bill,

To actually embed changes that you have made to a MIDI song in 'Mixing Console', you must use the 'Setup' option in 'Song Creator'.

After making your changes, open Song Creator at the Setup page by pressing [FUNCTION] > Tab to  MENU 2 >  SONG CREATOR > Tab to SETUP

You will see a list of the items that can be embedded in the song with the top 7 already checked (unless you have already changed them since you turned on the power).

The top item is 'Voice' which refers to the voices used in the song parts. You must have this checked to save voice changes to the song, but it is probably best to make sure that all of these first 7 items are checked.

You will probably notice another entry in the list marked 'Keyboard Voice'.  This refers to the voices currently set up in the Right and Left main voice parts, which you can also include in the song if you like by checking the item.

The items checked in the list will only be embedded in the song after pressing 'Apply' at the bottom right of the page.

Although the modifications have now been applied to the song, the revised version of the song has not yet been saved, so if you want to keep it, you must save it by pressing 'Save'

You can read about the Setup options in the section 'Selecting the Setup Data to be Recorded to the Top Position of the Song' starting on page 65 of the 'PSR-S975 Reference Manual' which you can download if you haven't already done so.  Note that this is not the same as the Owner's Manual, which you should have received with the keyboard!

Thank you, Ian! Much appreciated! Should have known that just saving from that initial screen wasn't enough!--Bill

Thanks Ian. I also learned something new. And this got me thinking: Say I record a song with accordion, and afterwards change the voice to a sax. This will not sound well, because you play an accordion voice and a sax voice in different ways. Interesting. Guess it will sound a little funny. Have to try this :)

Hi Toril,

You can try this, and play the song with the change included without saving the song if you just want to hear how it sounds.

As long as you embed the change in the song by pressing 'Stop' in the player (to move to the beginning of the song), and pressing 'Apply' (or 'Execute' on older models) on the Setup page of Song Creator, you can play the song as many times as you like until you select another song or turn off the power.

However if you simply change a song part voice, but don't 'Apply' it, then when you press 'Play' on the song player, the song will return to the beginning and use the original voices which are embedded in the first measure of the song!

When you are at the beginning of a song, each time that you press 'Apply', the current 'Mixing Console' settings that are checked in the 'Setup' list will be applied to the beginning of the song (except for the Keyboard Voice, which can be changed and embedded at any point in the song).

As long as you don't save the modified song, the original will remain unchanged.  Of course you could also save the modified song with a new name and keep both versions.

Regards

Ian
