Hi

I have been using the PSR S970  since it was released, and is a Great Keyboard , however can someone that had the PSR S970 and now using the Genos, what is the Difference in Sound either ,  Voices or Styles are they more improved compared to S970.
I also have the Korg PA4X but may try trade in for a Genos.
Appericate any Good .

Happy Christmas Everyone

I have both keyboards and whilst my 975 is light to take out my Genos is a whole different ball game. The keybed is so much nicer to use and the voices and styles superb. You need to play one and see for yourself.

Hi Ronnie --

I upgraded from S950 to Genos and I'm quite pleased with Genos and the upgrade. I'd love to give a detailed analysis, but I always fear touching off yet another replay of other threads.  ;)

As Eileen mentioned, the keybed itself is robust and has aftertouch for adding expression. It's a lot more satisfying to play electric piano on the Genos' FSX keybed, for example. On the down side, I find the stiffer action makes it a little harder to play drawbar organ -- I got kind of lazy with the light S950 keybed.

It took a short time to learn where certain menus/features are in the new graphical user interface. Once learned, however, I can really fly and get things done quickly. The Genos UI is easier to use than Montage/MODX; even it's screen seems more responsive.

For me, the Super Articulation 2 voices are a major boost. I love the articulations and the extra control provided by the articulation buttons.

Without going on and on, I double Eileen's suggestion to try one out. Bottom line, there really are significant differences between S9xx and Genos, I'm glad that I upgraded, and I intend to play Genos for a long time to come. It's a keeper.

Hope these quick opinions are useful -- pj

Hi Ronnie,
I still own both keyboards.
The S970 is a fine KB, but not in the same league as the Genos.
Everything sounds more alive, vibrant and realistic in the Genos.
You'll get SA2 voices which are awesome. The styles sound more like a band than a KB especially with the new Revo Drums and Bases.
The sound overall is just fuller and clearer. Almost HD like.
The interface, sliders, Knobs, large touchscreen etc makes it a joy to play.
One of the big things for me is aftertouch which the S970 is missing.
You can play much more expressive.
All older styles sound better in the Genos.
The Genos has a lot more DSP power that can be assigned to styles and voices.
And there is so much more ...
As Eileen said: I sometimes take out the S-970 for smaller jobs and again it is a fine KB, but I do miss a lot of things that the Genos has ...
If you can afford it go for it ...
Eric

But,

If your a gigging musician the PSR S950/970/975 keyboards are more than capable to amaze your audience.

Lighter, smaller, if there was an accident and it fell of the stand, then cheaper to replace or maybe buy 2, keep one in your studio and one for gigging and you'll still have enough money over to buy a sound system

Yes, Genos is a good keyboard , but, not 3 times better than a S975.

Just facts, not starting another war.

Pino.

No battle, John

The op was using a S970 and thinking of going for a Genos,
If I was as rich as you then I'd probably buy a couple 😀

Wishing you and all the members here a Happy Christmas 🎅🏻

The 970 is a very nice little keyboard and dose well in retirement homes and small venues but once you have played a Genos you will see what we all mean and it is not a heavy as you may think.

Here's a different point of view.  I have a Pa4x and a Genos if possible sell your s970 to help buy the Genos, but as much as I love my 'Genos I would never give up my Pa4x.

Not yet mentioned: The drums/percussion. I had the 950 and PA3x and have to say the drums are so alive and full of dimension on the Genos.

Keep in mind that the Genos has touch screen. You may or may not like that. The Genos is not much heavier than the S970, but has no onboard speakers.

The touch screen is great. So much easier to use (and more intuitive) than the buttons.

What makes the touchscreen great is the intuitive interface beneath it..
This feature blows my Korgs out of the church..  and i guess the 970 too

I wonder if the S975 successor will have a touch screen.
What about the new S775 ?
If so do we have to expect a price increase ?

I remember in the past most Yamaha arranger keyboard players were so happy with the " button " screen.

I love the buttons. That is why I bought a Tyros instead of a Genos.

I have played on the Genos and the PSR keybeds myself and personally I prefer the Genos/Tyros keybeds over the PSR ones. I also prefer buttons instead of touch screen but who knows, it may be just a matter of getting used to.

I was skeptical of the touch screen at first, but it won me over pretty quickly. More intuitive, easier to figure out where to touch (as opposed to some menus on the Tyros, like the mixer, where's it's unclear which buttons to push).

Agreed. At first I wasn't sure if I like it.
I got so used to the buttons. Felt at home with them.
However, as Fred said it won me over pretty quick once I got used to it.
Really intuitive and faster. Plus more real estate due to larger screen ...

With all due respect, I have never found a touch screen I can use.  Have had an Ipad for 3-4 years and don't know where it is.  It's useless if you can't use a touch screen.

For now they do, but I fear all future keyboards will come only with touch screens, so I hauled in a T5 as soon as I got my hands on one :)

Keep in mind that it all depends upon how you will use the keyboard and utilize the features. When it comes to live performers, the most important aspect is the player - NOT THE KEYBOARD! :)

Good luck,

So true. And the keyboard has to be easy for the player to operate. To me that means buttons, but others might love the touch screen. Please let us know what you decide. Whatever it is, you will get superb products from Yamaha!

Maybe when i explain what pulls me from pa4x to Genos...

Most of those things are Genos only
- touchscreen interface, so intuitive..
- the DSP power, that does not only surpass pa4x, but also my Kronos.
- dual midi din connectors
- the ensemble voices, which are unique, and the thing i loved most in my T5
- the SA2 voices, which take acoustic sounds another step up.
- the organ voices
- the joystick
- the liveknobs and sliders
- the assignable buttons
- the whole array of expansions and the large exp memmory..

Offcourse there is quite a lot of other things genos has over PSR (also covered on pa4x)
- better keybed with aftertouch.
- setlists
- 3 assignable buttons for articulations
- much better piano sounds, string sounds, guitar sounds (39mdifferent accoustic ones)
- at least 3 times the sample rom

Then there are some things in both instruments that triggered me
- the huge style collection for yamaha arrangers
- the performance memmories, which are the thing i miss most on pa4x
- all the 3rd party pc software for edditing and creation..
- 32 parts multitimbrallity, this is huge, as trough programs like v-console or keystage(ipad) reusing voices for a 2nd keyboard is easy
- the option to use arps on right hand voices.
- an incredible community

Offcourse i could write a list here of things the pa4x has over the genos, or an even longer list of things that would make Genos(or pa4x) even more cool.

But i think its safe to say, that the Genos is the best arranger key money can buy today, and probably in the next 3 years to come. And all the missing features, i will add with my ipad.

Well said and laid out Bachus.
You always put a lot of thought in your posts.
I like that.

Hi
Back again more questions
Am thinking seriously about getting the Geno's.

1...is the quality of the sounds and styles worth the big money for Geno's compared to the s970.

2. As the s970 has its own speakers, the Geno's has none, apart from the Yamaha speakers is there a Sound bar like used for TV systems ideal for the Geno's, as using a two tier stand the second tier (lower) could not hold Yamaha speakers as height not permitted.
3. Will my USB collection of Tyros 2  and PSR s 970 styles still work in the Geno's.

Sorry for many questions, but nobody near me in Ireland stock the Geno's or PSR keyboards.

Regards

Hello Ronnie :) All your styles will work with the Genos. However, some of them might sound better if you "tweak" them. Ajust some sound levels etc.
I guess you could use a soundbar, but the speakers Yamaha made for the Genos will sound better!
I have the S975 and a Tyros5, the model before Genos.
