6/8, 3/4, 4/4?? I'm lost.

I'm trying to play "the green leaves of summer" in 6/8.
I've found a style in 3/4.
I know that the accents on a 6/8 song are on one and on 4. On a 3/4 the accent is on one.
Because I'm a beginner I want to play the song as it is so in 6/8.
I was looking for another style so I went to Ballad, 6-8Modern (on my psr-s750) expecting
it to bee 6/8 but actually it is 4/4. Why is it called 6-8Modern then???
When I go to the style creator, I can't even select a 6/8 style.
I'm totally lost in the dark with this. Maybe somebody can shine a little light on this?

Having 6/8 styles actually be 4/4 is a "feature" of Yamaha.

I just use the preset style (in my case I use 6-8SlowRock for this song), and it sounds fine to me. The accents are on the first and middle beats of the bar, which is what you want.

There are purists who create true 6/8 styles, and hopefully they'll respond if you're unhappy with Yamaha's implementation.

I'm just a beginner.
I've 3 or 6 notes in a bar (3/4/or 6/8)
How does the counting go with 4/4?

Hallo Aad,

Ik heb zelf de zogenaamde 6/8 styles in echte 6/8 time signature bewerkt van de Tyros 3, 4, 5 en Genos.
Yamaha propt 2x een 6/8 maat in een 4/4 maat.
Daardoor loopt deze styles niet synchroon met een 6/8 song of score.

Misschien werkt mijn bewerkte styles of jouw psr-750.

You need to ignore the flashing start/stop button, and listen to the style. The initial downbeat is 1, of course, and the second downbeat will be on 4.

For "A time to be reap-in", "time" is on the 1 beat. Hold it for 1234. Right after you hear the second downbeat (which is 4), you play "to be" as 5 and 6. "reap" starts on the 1 of the next bar, but you immediately play "in" holding it for 2345. "a" is 6.

I find just listening to the style allows me to play the song properly.

It really doesn't matter as long as it sounds the way you want. In fact 6/8 has a lot in common with 2/4, really just 2/4 with triplets. Just as 12/8 doowop is really just 4/4 with triplets, and is often written either way. So using 4/4 style format is not as illogical as it sounds, in a sense each bar as written in 6/8 can be considered half a bar in 4/4.  As far as counting is concerned, each group of three triplets are one beat, regardless of how many you consider in the bar. The 'red light' signifying the first beat of the style bar will only show every second bar but other than that everything is the same.
It seems that nothing causes more misunderstanding in music than time signatures. Because they are written like fractions, people assume they are exact like mathematical terms, and there is a right and a wrong. Actually they are just a convenient way of writing and reading the musical score by grouping the notes logically to make it easy to understand. They are also a kind of code or convention for certain types of music which give an indication of how it should be played. A musician would instantly know for example how a 6/8 jig or a 12/8 doowop should sound or feel. When it comes to the style, it really doesn't matter because you are already interpreting the feel by how the style is edited.
BTW - many modern versions of the song I have heard are actually played in conventional 4/4, and not in the original triplet style, but as a beginner you may not be ready for that kind of re-interpretation.

Thanks Fred and Mike,

Listen to a style helps me play the song on a 3/4 time signature.
To see a 4/4 bar as a 2 * 2/4 played with triplets (I hope you still understand it  Guets are not allowed to view links. In order to access the links, please Register or Login) helps me alot in placing the 6/8  signature in a 4/4 signature.

Hi Wim,

Yes I did read your response and I typed a response but something went
wrong because I can't see it in the forum. Sorry.
It's now clear to me how I can use a 6/8 signature.
I downloaded your styles and they work on my PSR-S750.
For me these styles are the best solutions for now because for learning
I use the metronome allot and I record the song and can check the score.

You're a hero! I was trying to play "Nothing Else Matters" with a choir, but the on-board style does not work, because effectivly you can only do breaks etc. in 12 bar blocks. But this songs has a lot of changes which happen on "single" bar distances, not dual-bar, so the style would be out of sync with the choir. What the hell was Yamaha thinking when they created 6/8 in 4/4?!
But your styles are great, work like a charm!
