I was reading the pdf manual for the Bose L1 Compact and came across this text:

Note: The two L1® Compact Extensions are identical to each other. Either one can
be used on the top or bottom, but if one extension is used, both must be used.

Why can't just one extension be used?

I've used just one extension, and it worked fine.

Will be interested to see the answer.

This sounds like an error in the user manual text. One extention works fine.

I agree with Fred and Toril.  Works fine with one.

ANSWER FROM BOSE

On the L1 Compact section of a Bose forum, the one-vs-two extension question has been asked many times.  "Though it's been said many times, many ways," the following conveys the essence of all of the responses from Bose:

Q: Why does Bose say that I have to use both extensions?

A: You can use either or both extensions but we didn't see applications where there are advantages to using one so we don't promote it that way.

End of story.

I used two Bose Compacts, each with one extension for many years, before upgrading to LD Systems Maui 5's.  I do the same with them.
Way back, I phoned Bose and asked if it was o.k. and then said yes.

Yes, you can use just one extension, but mainly for smaller venues where everyone is seated, such as restaurants and assisted living centers. When you perform a larger venue, where there often people standing or dancing, you will need both extensions to reach the back of the room effectively. Additionally, I always felt that having both extensions provided me with better mid range sounds, so I always used both.

Good luck,

That is my experience also, Gary. Even if people are seated, the sound distributes more evenly throughout the room, and the mid range is better, so I always use both extentions. And I have also discovered that if the base unit is too close to a wall, it gets a little boomy. I love my Bose L1 compact!
