What kind of "music"? Sheet music? MP3 files? YouTube videos?

Unfortunately, technology is not quite there yet.

There are programs which claim to be able to convert audio data into MIDI data, but the results are usually "iffy" at best.

As long as the audio consists of a monophonic melody (i.e., made up of single notes, as opposed to polyphonic or multiple notes at the same time), and as long as the instrument's sound doesn't contain a lot of strong harmonics (which might be misidentified as additional notes), and the sound doesn't have a lot of effects or distortion added, then the results might be very good.

But how often is that the case? In the majority of cases the music is too complex for a program to accurately convert the sound frequencies into MIDI data.

This is not to say that you shouldn't bother looking for and trying out programs which claim to be able to do this-- merely that you should not get your hopes up too high about the kind of results you're likely to get. At best, the resulting MIDI data would be a starting point and you'd need to check it carefully for errors and make corrections to it.

A musician with a pretty good ear can usually do a better job of transcribing a musical recording by hand.

I have been trying that over the years and have spend many MANY hours. It does NOT work. A solo instrument yes. Two instruments work so so only if they are very clear. If it is a band playing, let alone with a singer.... forget it. Music is analogue and midi is 'computer language read electronic' and it doesn't work (like you I wished it was).

I've just downloaded the free trial version of the ensemble edition to try out. Here's hoping it works as well as they claim! :)

It takes some manipulation, but I've had some success with the program, Michael.  I only have the trial version also.

I simply thought that if Luis wanted to give this a try, it may give him a sense of what he's up against with multiple instruments playing in the MP3 file.
